Road-Tripping with Your Dog? Here Are Some Questions You Should Ask

Does your dog get excited when it’s time to hop in the car for a ride, or do they get a little nervous? Depending on how well your dog travels and their experience with car rides, you may need to prep a little more for a long road trip, like investing in a travel kennel for dog safety. Whether it’s a road trip with many camping stops or a long car ride to a favorite destination, you can make the drive as comfortable as possible for your V.I.P. (very important pet).

If you’re stopping by the vet beforehand or doing some online research, you can ask a few questions to determine what your dog will need for a road trip. Dogs that have been diagnosed with medical conditions, including anxiety and physical conditions, may need to see their vet beforehand, regardless of online research. Either way, the following questions are great suggestions for what to ask.

Do You Need a Travel Kennel?

Many dogs need kennels, or travel dog kennels, to help them feel safe and secure inside a car. Some four-legged family members are comfortable lying in the backseat, and you’re not breaking any laws traveling this way (but consider a seatbelt harness). Still, it may not be the best way to transport your particular dog, especially if they’re anxious in a car. A roomy kennel is a place where they can turn, stand, and lay down without tripping in the back. You can also find breathable kennel covers if your dog is better off not seeing the drive. Check out the Petmate Sky Kennel for a reliable option for all of your kennel needs.

How Often Should You Stop?

Like humans, dogs need breaks in the car. You know your dog best, but a general rule of thumb is to stop and let your dog out every two to four hours. Essentially, just bring them out on a leash whenever you stop for a bathroom break or to refill your gas tank. Let them get some sniffs in, drink water, and relieve themselves. Your trip might be a little longer with a dog, but they’re one of the easier animals to bring on road trips.

Will My Dog Get Anxious?

Your dog may get anxious. Even dogs that are great with travel can get nervous on long car rides. Large dog kennels can help anxious pups feel more secure. However, they may still whine if they are not used to a kennel. If you want to help your dog feel as safe and comfortable as possible, introduce them to the kennel long before your planned road trip so it feels like a safe space.

What Can I Expect Once We Get to Our Destination?

You can still expect a little nervousness if you have an anxious pet, but some dogs are really excited to get to a destination after a long trip—mainly if they’re used to traveling. You can expect your dog to want to explore everything in the area. They’ll move quickly and be right back at your side. If you have more than one dog, they’ll check things out together before they get to playing. After a long day of travel and nerves, your dog will be ready for some good rest!

Traveling with your dog can be a great bonding experience for both of you. You’ll also get to make lots of memories with your fur family. Safe travels!
