6 Types of Cats and What They Need in Your Home

Crazy or Cool: What Kind of Cat Do You Have and What Do They Need?

If you have a cat or are familiar with cats, you know they have very unique personalities. Each cat has its own needs that you must meet as a pet parent. Even the most independent domesticated cat will need some support. When you want to get to the bottom of your cat's needs, find out if they fit into one of the following categories. It may help you determine which items to keep in your home and what to do when your cat does their quirky cat things.

The Chill Friend

The chill friend is the cat that everyone hopes they get when they adopt a cat. They’re the mellow guy or gal who hangs out on the windowsill, their tail flicking slowly and eyes mostly closed. The chill friend enjoys comfortable bedding for cats, classic cat toys with a bell, and sitting behind you on the couch. They might also be the guy who wakes you up in the morning for food, but you win some and lose some.

The Ghost Hunter

If you have or have encountered a cat that suddenly launches themselves across the room with their pupils blown out, only for them to stop and stare at a corner of the room with a crazed look in their eye, you have before you a ghost hunter. These cats need lots of room to run, a cat tree to climb, and hiding places to go when the ghosts come out. You can get them bigger catnip mice, which they will carry around the room when the ghost hunt is over.

The Spider Catcher

Spiders, mice, and other critters, beware—the spider catcher cat is the cat people want on farms or around areas with plenty of bugs. Spider catchers might not always win the prize, but that doesn’t stop them from trying. Whether it’s hours of entertainment or a winged present flapping around your room when you wake up, the spider catcher certainly keeps things interesting. You can keep them busy with interactive cat toys and cat wands and help these active cats stay hydrated with a cat water fountain.

The Second Mom

Some cats just have a mother’s touch. You’ll find them curled up next to babies or snuggled into your side at night. They’re always nearby when you’re sick and happy to give other pets in the house a quick bath. These gentle cats are great family cats, so you’re lucky if you happen to adopt one. The second mom loves their cat beds, favorite treats, and hanging out with you in the kitchen.

The Queen Bee

The cat that rules the roost needs little introduction. Always a female cat who treats you like a servant, the queen bee has the quintessential attitude that comes to mind when you think of an older female cat. They need space. They need food (yours, preferably). They need a sunny place on the carpet. Finally, they need a minion to swat at when they get too close. They’re the cat that makes you wait for them, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Bully

The bully isn’t an inherently bad guy. They just take charge and stake their claim. These cats are the ones you bring into the house, thinking they’re timid, and a month later, they’re bossing the dog around. The bully shows ghost-hunter tendencies, which is why you might want to invest in a top entry litter box, but they can actually be pretty mellow. Never one to intentionally scratch, the bully needs consistent nail trimming, just in case they throw a heavy paw.

There are all kinds of cats, and the breed or where you adopted the cat may also impact their personality. Like kids, pets are all unique and deserve love and attention from their parents—that’s you!
